OK Here is Bob Almond, Billy Tucci, Norm Breyfogle and Me.

Eddy Chapman Driving one of the vehicles down to Charlotte North Carolina. I think he was a tad drowsy.

We stopped at Mount Airy on the way back to see Andy Griffiths' town of Mayberry. When I asked for a glass of water at a stop the waitress thought we were from another country.

I guess Andy is popular here.

Philadelphia is really nice, a great show Wizard puts on.

That is not a mask it was paint on the right.

Sorry for being late, but it was so busy I got no Pictures but a few. Here is the effervescent Scotsman of the highest order, Mike McKone, with Kieth portrait on his left. Jimmy Calafiore is to my right when I took this, but his photo was to blurred.

Here is Larry Harrison, He was across from Mike. We are at the bar across from Rosemont convention center having Shirley Temples.

I stopped in Cleveland to let Kieth get a gander of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but it had just closed. So I took some pics.

As we went through the hall I saw another buddy, Stuart Sayger a very talented artist with a unique style (note finger tips.).

And for faint of heart, Liz and Bernie Wrightson, the master of the quill and brush! He is just to good.
They are both the best!

My Wicked West favorite, Neil Vokes. What can I say, he lost more weight then me this time 'round but I am working out now...

Finaly my other two goomba's Billy Tucci digging Comic con legend Rusty B's Red sox Shirt. Whadda ya want Billy we crapped out this year...

Wow! I did not realize that was the last post so long ago. OK I did some stuff including a slew of shows from Maine to South Carolina, Stopping off at Mt. Airy, NC (Mayberry). And on out to Chicago and a bunch of cities in between.
This Oct.11th to 17th I will be at Jacob Javits center for the 2nd largest convention in the U.S..
I will have some images to post shortly I need to crop them, as well as artwork.

Been out of commission for a bit, Lost a couple of people and won't bore you with details.

Anyway I have a couple of things.

Here is a Cap I penciled at Doctors office the other day.
I went to A Comic Show Sunday Last and had to leave early to get my Bedroom floor done. Been Sheetrocking room at a time in my house. Walls and ceilings all Plaster. New Floors and where there is Oak, I sand and re-finish. Takes a while, but I am happy so far. Nicer to just contract someone, but then I would feel Lazy.

The King Size Bed Frame will be trashed so I can Build a Platform Base. I like the firm Platform bases much better and you can build drawers into the underside as well. I found some nice plans online.

Fun Time!

I had told my brother Mike about the CBS shows online, specificaly "Have Gun Will Travel", And "Perry Mason". I loved those shows. Anyway he asked if it was a truck in the Background of a scene in Have gun will travel, where Palladin is turning a herd of cows in a field.

As the camera truck pans the turn...WAHM! A big old Flat Bed truck settin' in the middle of the scene.

Dead Center!

Anyway I screwed up a few things in Unsolved Mysteries. Like putting Mercedes parts on Ford crashes. Making cars change models in mid scene and much more that never raised a letter. 11 years worth so have fun looking at reruns.

Guile penciled this piece and I had at it. I used #2 W&N Brush mostly but had to kick in with a Deleter 102 crowquill. It was a labor of love because I like challenging pages.

These are the type that help me to attempt to seperste backgrounds.

I will play with the background and see how it comes out.

I used a #2 W&N series seven Brush and Speedball Superblack Ink.

New York Comic Con 2009

Hi Everybody!

OK here's the skinny...

New York Comic Con predictions were that artists would have a tough time selling sketches for big money and it may be slow. That was the buzz I heard. Then we got to the Big Apple around 4:00 pm on thursday, I drove a van For Larry Harrison and Rusty drove one as well. We unloaded and got to our rooms that night dead on our feet.

Friday Morning I drove the Gang over to the Javitts center and Bada-Bing! a crowd...a goodly crowd on Friday Morning. Wow! Imagine that, people must want to get in and out before the weekend. So we piled out of the van like a Barnum and Baily clown car, except for all the knee and back creaking. Jay Fife unloaded his Refridgerator size portfolio trunk and we were off.

The place was buzzing at 8:30AM with setups going on and dealers checking out the competition and the throngs were lining up for tickets.

Artist alley was sparse but that was probably because they have a quick setup and can come in a tad late. Bob Almond had our Box of Inkwell Awards comp books for those that donated last year to help support us via Ebay auctions. We also got signatures of all the contributors to sell some of these CSketch books for the 2009 Inkwell Awards.

I got about 15 Dark Avengers Sketch Cover Variants for new sketches this year to auction off.

We did very well and you can get the EBay Link for those from www.inkwellawards.com site.

I met some wonderful new artist and Inkers and it was a great show. Jammed every day. Sunday was as good as Saturday!

Jimmy Cheung was at artist alley. An incredible Penciller and fav of mine, not because Johnny Dell Inks him, because I love his art style.

The Entrance was a huge mass most of the show as well.

There were a ton of Girls and boys dressed up in some pretty good costumes.

Inkweller Jay leisten was in attendence. A super inker in his own right. He had some beautiful pages with him.

Zantanna was there...I forgot what the other character is though...sorry.
Normally I wouldn't take any photos of the Jedi because they are at every show, But there was something about these guys...I can't put my finger on it.
And of course I found a couple of my "Nieces" at the show.

Well it was fun there was tons of Art Books and things to see. Prices were not to bad there was something for everybody. So if you want a real comic con and not a pop culture show, this has to be the Best in the East Coast.

Look What I found!

Hey Naomi and Adrienne,

Look what I found. It's early 80's so i was coming out of the 70's Disco scene, ya know Huggy Bear, Silk shirts, lottsa scotch guard under the armpits, etc,.

One of my Vocal students, Roy Something or other...NOTTTT!!!!

If I can find a picture of Ronny with a freedom curl I will post it high res.

Here's a picture of Bobby Hebb up at his old house in Rockport. I think we were messing around when I was working on an Orion film. He moved permanent to Nashville and I feel Guilty for not getting my butt down there. Maybe this year.

Hans took this after one of the Bmw Shoots, so he could show the German's how cool Americans are....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

I actually bought that Blue Ford off junior (only car he sold that worked good.), to do a stunt with and put so much dough in it for the stunt, I was going to keep it. But the Director had other Ideas and we smashed them both up. Dicky and John Colon worked with me on this, with Adriennes favorite Unsolved Mysteries Director Eric. Outside of having Gas that week it was a good shoot. Boyd Estes is Da' bomb with a camera.

Now I can tell the secret I have been holding in all these years....I left the explosives in the trunk of the ford when we did the dry runs, and found out when the car hit the curbing on the last pass and blew a tire..HA, HA, I snuck them out before the stunt coordinator got to the car. AND, I put Mercedes parts on the street after the smash to see if anybody would write in to the show.

Hey, it's only a movie.

HEY LOOK.. It's Roy Pahlm (in the cabby hat looking at me taking picture). He looked like Sean Connery. This was a True Detectives shoot set in the late thirty's we filmed in New Bedford, and that 1939 Bus I had, smoked the neighborhood out. This was a summer replacement for, I think, Unsolved Mysteries or Rescue 911, can't remember, we used the same crew pretty much. I think it lasted one summer. I did like the Directer Mark, he was fresh from film editing and was so excited. In fact he did a really good job for a newcomer. I believe he works at the La Brea McDonalds in LA now...No that's mean, stop it. (You guys remember La Brae, in LA, HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!!)

Anyway I wish I took more pictures on sets, but I was usually to busy working, stupid me.

Boston Comic Con 2008

Hi, it's me!

Well I got back from Boston's new Mini Comic Con and it was a pretty good show overall.

Rusty and I got there a little after 10:00 am and it was crowded.

I saw some guys from the Inkwell, Mark McKenna, Bob Almond, Scott Ambrusion, Norman Lee (Who was there with what I thought was a penthouse Pet of the month, You dog Norman ;-) ).

Cesar Feliciano was there with Kris Carter, Bob Shaw (Serendipity Sales art rep.) along with Peter Laird, Paul Ryan and Mike Lilly and many others.

But the reason I really likes it was Bernie Wrightson, Who is perhaps the one standout artist of my comics reading life.

Bernie was there with Liz, and a bust of Frankenstein, modeled after his drawings. He was very Gracious, and a Friend of mine bought a couple of his drawings for $2,000.00. Wow, I thought Neal Adams got a lot.

I introduced myself, told him about the Inkwell awards and asked if he would do a cover for the Secret Invasion book, He at once said he would (what a guy), so I grabbed Bob Almond and a book, and Bob sealed the deal.

His art has always been number one in my book, and if you don't have it already, buy the newer Frankenstein volume. It reproduces his art more faithfully then the earlier edition, and is a must have.

Anyway, I could go on, but he is just to good an artist and you guys know that already.

Peter Laird, Local Boy does good, was there as well and he looks great.

Scott Ambrusion was there all in his Pirates outfit, he actually looked at home in it.

Cesar and Kris were there doing sketches and hawking there wares. I hope they made a ton.

Mark McKenna and Norman Lee were there set up next to Wrightson and Paul Ryan. Paul was there with his Phantom art. I really like Paul's work.

Mark had some Wicked cool inks he brought, and his work is just Stellar.

Norman is getting to be quit a penciller, and it would not surprise me to see him pencilling at some date in the future.

Brian Kong was there and is a super illustrator. He even offered up an Invasion cover for the Inkwell awards, along with Norman Lee, Paul Ryan, Peter Laird, Hannibal King and A few others. So they get a Tip of the Hat as well for that.

There was Larry Harrison, an advertiser of the Inkwell Awards, so if your ever in Salem, Mass or Medford, Mass you can visit one of his comic and gaming superstores. And Larry is actually one of the nicest guys I know.

The show was bustling, and I love the fact that it is close.

Baltimore Con 2008

Just got back from Baltimore Comic Con 2008.

It was a quick ride down and the weather was rain.

The show started at 10am Saturday morning and the crowd was massive for this show.
The line was as long at 2PM as it was at 10 in the morning.

Gene Colan couldn't make it, so I was going to leave but some friends were there, and it was worth going to.

Norman Lee was there along with Neil Vokes, Herb Trimpe, Mark McKenna, Jim Calafiore and a host of others.

Tom Schloendorm was showcasing his tales of the Starlite Drive-in inks over Mike Williams (Hope they sell a ton). This book will be a dvd soon.

Herb Trimpe blocked in a page I am inking over him ( he was kind enough to show me some suggestions on it.). Herb is a talented guy.

Adam Hughes was Jammed the whole show.

Looked like Tom Raney had his hands full the whole show.

Jim Calafiore and Mike Mckone were there with some impressive art.

I met up with Craig Rousseau, he is inking his own art and doing an admirable job at it.

Karl Story was there and I like how he does Hair. Funny it is favorite thing to ink and my weakness. He does the hair before anything else on a page.

Mike Manley was in attendence. Mike is a very helpful person and a great talent.

Bob McKleod was there and doing sketches throughout. What can you say except he is a prodigy. I am not impressed by to many people, but he knows his stuff.

Jim Lee was signing from start to finish and is very gracious, he makes drawing look easy.

Nick Cardy was there with his wife, but he told a fan of his that she was some girl that picked him up on the way into the show. He is a hot ticket. and he did very well there.

Jay Fife is coming into his own on drawing. Love to see him do a book.

Mark Sparacio was doing some watercolors and has it down to a science. Great work!

Tom Breveroot took a look at my inks, I don't know him but he was critiqueing someone and I could see he sounded like he knew what he was doing.

I have to say he picked up on what I know my weaknesses are, and that was pretty good. So he gets a pass.

Mark McKenna was drawing and Inking commissions. He is a closet penciler and doing some cool art. Go Mark!

Cully Hamner was there doing commissions.

The special edition Secret invasion for the Baltimore con was the worst looking book I have seen lately.

Rags Morales is a wonderful inker. And when I saw the cover it was horrid, But inside there is no way to describe it other then "Shoot the editor for having the colorist do the danmge to that book that was done", not since Hulk Destruction Have I seen a colorist destroy the such great inks.

Make Mine DC! (Until I read a DC book that badly done, I'm wicked fickle like that.).

I saw some very nice indy books there this year. A lot of prof talent coming up.

The show was so busy I did not to much inkwell awards books for the auction because the guys were to busy making money so I figure I will do that later.

There was a tendency for some artists to put telephone numbers on their artwork, which is ok if you get it. By the same token their were some real deals there. I only buy from the guys I know because it helps me learn and means something. I mean in my own personal view, I would take a Kinkaid oil over an Alex Ross drawing anyday. Does he know there are other poses. Not slamming the guy just thinking out loud.

One guy was selling original art sleeves for $6.00 a pop next to a guy that sold them for $2.00 each. Then he had 100 Strathmore blueline pages for $6.00 each!!!!!! Someone shoulda bitch slapped him. At least 400 Strathmore for $10.00 each wouldn't have hurt as much if you needed a piece.

The ride back was slowed up and hour or so due to a tracker trailer accident. The cab was a melted slag (See Photo), and the south bound traffic was backed up for miles.

But all in all, a very nice show, and the promoter seems to still give food and support to venders throughout, so my hats off to them.

New Inks

I saw this Deodato pencil and loved it. I went all brush, and had a ball flying through it. Mike Deodato always impressed me with his lighting of characters.

It is Peter Parker and MaryJane.

This next one is a cover that was printed in pencils and the artist is sooo silverage. I love it.

Hulk By Guile

This is a page I inked Penciled by Guile, who is a wonderful artist.

After Inking it I decided to try my hand at coloring it. Kris Carter (Local Artist on Grimm Fairy Tales, Epoch and others) was kind enough to give me a few tips on coloring in Photoshop.

Well I know I have not updated for a while so I will post sooner then I have been.

The Spirit

Hi Kid's,

Just got back from Granite Con in New Hampshire. I met up with Art Rep Bob Shaw, Bob Almond and Keith Champagne. Keith was wonderful and has taught me sooo much. Bob Almond and I got some Inkwell award covers for the EBay auctions to help support it, so it was a good day. Keith did a really cool cover for us, That's why everybody should buy the books he writes.

And when I got home I had a scan of Will Eisner's Spirit in my E-Mail.

Will Eisner's Spirit, is my favorite Character growing up.

So when Mike Williams sent me the scan, I inked it before the Page got to me.
This is a variation of his pencils, He did it from memory, which is incredible enough. I only removed a couple of lines from the cheek and redrew the mouth to fit the comic. His version which is below is in his super character style.
I love Mike's work and so It is always fun to ink these pin-ups.

Here is another of Philip Tan's Pencils I inked. Funny he was surprised I used brush on his last one, so I guess someone was right about his pages being inked in crowquil.

I like the way he stages his scenes and enjoy inking him in brush. If I had paper that would let you lay down a good quil line I would do it that way but good kid finish is tough to get.
This was done on 11"X17" Blueline and with 100% Brush (Series 7 #2 W&N), and Speedball SuperBlack Ink.

2008 New York Comic Con

Well the New York Comic Con has come and gone.

It was a huge show and there was a lot to see.

I picked up Bob Almond and Cesar Feliciano and Drove into the Big Apple where we met up with Art rep Bob Shaw, Kris Carter and their friend Patrick.

Artist alley held a few surprises... Leonard Starr was there, and his artwork was superb on his dailies of "on Stage" and "Little Orphan Annie".

Joe and Mark Sinnott were there, and looked like they were enjoying themselves. Joe did a cover for the Inkwell Awards auction and blew us away. He still cranks out incredible artwork.

Neal Adams was in form and his son Josh had some really nice work there in the form of a sketchbook. He has an upcoming project that will be out in the near future.

Neal had some wonderful examples of his career work. He is one funny dude, I have to laugh because he does not BS people when they ask about their work and look for a critique.

My big surprise was Steve Rude. I had met him before and I have an old sketchbook of is but, and this is your big but, his original pages for "Nexus 100" 'bout knocked my eyes out.

Twice up pages watercolored and they were just as super as anyone can believe. I was stunned that his work was so good. I should have taken pictures but you can always buy the book. It is worth the price.

I met up with Art Thibert (Pronounced T-Bare) took me a bit to get it down, Art's work is fabulous. He can pencil as well as he inks and I am impressed. He was with his partner on his "Chronos" book. He is a wonderful person and is doing a cover for the Inkwell Awards as well. So check out his books they are really great.

I saw a friend Larry Harrison (Harrison's Comics in Salem, MA) and he showed me a page he bought off of a fellow by the name of Doug Klauba. It knocked my socks off so I had to get a Flash Gordon colored print with sketches for myself. Normally I don't care for prints or sketches to hang on the wall (usually just original INKED pages), But this cat has it going on. He is schooled a bit by Alex (Gimmee-all-your-money-for-my-signature) Ross. And is one hell of an artist. His pages are extremely detailed and are a site to behold.

Next stop was Elvira artist and fellow Wally Wood worshiper, Ron Sutton. Ron was there a young lady who writes and draws equally well and I am having a senior moment about her name but will find out from him. Ron is coming out with an issue of Fear agent #22. It is a must have. He put a lot of work in the pages and they looked like they were Guided by the Master himself, WW. Check it out, you will like what you see.

Bob Layton was there and I asked for a cover drawing for te inkwell Awards which he graciously accepted to do. I had not seen him since 1985. He still looks the same...

Cesar and I talked with Leonard Kirk for a while and his new title may surprise you.

I really like his work.

Jim Lee was there signing for his fans.

I only got a quick hello in to Gail Simone, as she was busy at the DC booth. She started the "Unscrewed" project off on her YABs board. Tom Stillwell was there also and touting "Unscrewed". He is dedicated, I will give him that. He is also out with a new comic.

Archie Booth was jammed and Ron Dante showed up. It was nice seeing him again.

Keith Champagne was there along with Patrick Gleason.

I did not see Gene Colin or Norm Breyfogle, I know Norm was there, but I missed him.

Superstar Artist/Inker Bob Mcleod was there, and sold out of his book. It was funny too because Cesar and I were looking through an artists portfolio, and we were checking the inkers out that he had worked with. Without mentioning names we were looking and the first few were a little heavy and scratchy, next were a little better, next were the same, Then they got better and then, the pages were pure enjoyment, lo-and-behold...Bob Mcleod inked them. His work just kills me.

Mark Mckenna was setup with McKone and Jim Califiore, The best guys in the show. Mark had some nice pages and had a birthday so send money. The three had some really great pages there and are always a pleasure to see.

The show was very well done and Bob was suffering from a toothache which is just about as bad as it gets, yet put on a very good front.

Bob Smith was there and I wanted to talk with him more but missed him. He is my favorite Archie inker and he is just an all around great guy as well as prolific inker.

I know I am forgetting half the people we saw but I guess that's par for the course. Normally I would have twisted arms for my sketchbook but I did not this trip. It was so large and we did so much on one floor I never got to a panel that I wanted to see. The show is huge and needs to go later.

Wow I tried to post about a malware /Spammer that is a member of Google's Blooger, that spammed me twice. After repeated e-mails Google, they must feel it is OK for them to do this. Well I posted and my post got deleted...Strange.

I e-mailed Google direct as well. So I guess this is my last post and I will move elsewhere and delete all references to google from my computer, since they can not be trusted to delete users that send viruses and malware to infect peoples computers. Do not click on the deleted users name without some protection on your computer, since he uses Blogger as one of the places he sends it out from. I notified Cybercrimes div. of his info, since Blogger has not responded.

So here is my last post before I pull the plug.

Shylock 3

Welcome Back...

Mike Williams, A Native New Yorker living in the wild west has a unique style of his own. Faintly reminicent of a cross between Mad's Angelo Torres, and Mort Druker ( two of my more favorite satire artists).

His Shylock series started out nice enough, with a co-writer. But after issue two, he is writing solo, and the story is really done well. You can see a progression in his art as he starts fresh on issue #3 and bangs it out of the park.

The story is a mob story, so it is familiar ground between us, as we grew up in that area of the street. He even uses backgrounds and vehicles as accurately as can be.

The characters stretch from New York to Boston, and it is not the sappy phoney Soprano's type. This is the gritty, real style, don't #@*& in your backyard, Joey Bagadonuts type story.

Anyway, I am telling you this because he asked me to ink his last issue of this triogy.

As a brush inker, I really loved his style of art. It could be done with quill, but I like the organic look ,and so far he likes what I did. So Here are a few Pages. Hopefully we will wrap up before June and he can get this out. I will love to see the finished product myself, since we are past the hand lettering and on to digital lettering (I miss hand lettered pages myself, though some books still are done that way). That means I don't know what they are saying yet.

More Batman

Carmine Infantino said he liked the Batman I inked and asked to sign it. That was nice of him. He will be at the New York Con in April, for anyone that wishes to pick up his new book.

Here is a Batman drawing done by Philip Tan. Sorry to say, I did not know of his work till I saw him on Deviant art. He has a nice dramatic boldness, I like his pages. I inked this with all brush. I have not seen a reference as to how he is inked yet. T hat is OK though because I liked doing this. See you next Time.

I found this pencil sketch of Batman by Carmine infantino, and decided to put ink to it. I met Carmine a year ago and he is a very serious guy. Knows his stuff and is very geniune. He was one of the guys that gave us the Silverage of comics. Batman , Pencilled by Carmine Infantino, Finishes and Inks by me.

Anyway I will see him this weekend and see if he has some pencils for me to play with.

Jim Mooney, father of Supergirl

After an introduction to Jim Mooney from Dan Best, I was sent some drawings and missed one in the envelope, so I just inked it. Jim said it was his most popular pose, and I aggree, it is nice.
I inked this with 100% brush, W&N series 7 #2.
It is always a joy to ink the great artists of the early years. And Jim is a wonderful guy to boot.

Batman Number 1 Recreation

I like doing these recreations because they are fun. The tough parts are when you letter by hand and trying to see the actual lines they put down from the original cover.

I went line for ine to reproduce it as acurate as I could to see how Bob Kane drew it originally.

Anyway It is done and I have to finish up FMC and Shylock now that my scanner is here.

The sketch is nice enough so I lightboxed it to an EON Board and Rendered a bit and inked it. Here is the result.
I did e-mail Norm to kinda see what direction he liked to go in because this was the first time inking him.
I used a W&N Sries 7 #2 and rapidograph.

Gene Colan

Gene Colan, Artist of Many comic book titles including War books, to Daredevil, Batman, Tomb of Dracular and more, from the 1940's thru to 2007, when he did the last pages of Blade.

His work is really powerful, with dramatic lighting and expressive style.

I love his work and so it was a thrill when he told me I cold ink any of the sketches he has on his web folder.

I was kind of quick on the first one because I did not use reference to get my feet wet. So now I see I missed the mark in some areas. But I thought I would post it anyway.

The subject is Sherlock Holmes and Dracular. I love the calm demeanor on Sherlocks face.

It's funny trying to "read pencils from an artist. Some artists have very little rendering and some go nuts with lines, Gene's is more like a painting and subject you to interpret the lines needed. Blue lines are tough because they loose some fine detail.

The inkers on Gene's pencils over the years did a wonderful job. You have to be an artist to interpret the lines correctly, so as not to lose his style and effect, while popping the page.

This was done on 11"X17" with a W&N #2 Series 7 brush and 102 crowquill.

Hopefully the next one will be a lot better.

Topsfield Fair!

America's Oldest Fair. Well my Honey and I went to the Fair.

After All these years you would think they would have something new and exciting, besides Tractor Pulls, Horse Shows, Pig Races and Sheep Shearing.

The Art Show is my Favorite.

The Trade Building use to have really cutting edge products but now it is old rehashed "only available through Television" type products that couldn't be sold on television anymore.
Food was plentiful and if you are looking to put a cork in an artery, Topsfield Fair is just what the doctor ordered.

Another newer staple of the fair is a south American Band featuring Pan Flute music. They are very Soothing and are a crowd favorite.

The Fairway is littered with runaway's trying desperately to get you to part with a buck on their Games. I won 7 straight Games the Skeeball type game and won all the kids toys last year so this year I passed.

The old Hauned Houses are still there and bring back memories s a kid going through them for the first time.

It is a lot of walking and there are Animal and music shows that are entertaining. The only real killer are the women that bring infants to a place that mobed, and use their carriges to push through crowds. I like to kick the carriges every once and a while and then scream "Hey Watch it!" (Not Really:-))

It is wonderful for first timers, because there is so much to see, but for people that have been going for years it is soso. They really have not brought the Bar up in the past thirty Years.
The Sand Sculpter is nice and had an assistant with him. He has been their for a few years and is really talented.

The Petting Zoo is nice, but bring a lot of anti Bacterial soap and bleach because they are patheticaly looking animals.

The Budweiser Clydesdales were there this year. They are really great looking animals and so massive, They have the really big ones, and they are cared for extremely well. There is only One Wagon, One Organ Cart and a stable of 27 top notch bred Clydesdales they own. I used to see them every year in Savanna, Georgia during the Saint Patricks day weekend (It is Huge in Savanna). Rides are plentful.

Anyway the art, Sportsmen and trade buildings are my favorite. Here are some Pictures...

OK I ordered ordered Fiber Optic ISP and Cancelled AOL after just shy of 30 Years...WHOOOAAA! I didn't think I was on the web that long. It was like yesterday with my brothers trying to get a 6502 chip to respond.

Tape storage systems that stretched and you went through hell trying to retrieve the data. Using CPM80 to get systems up and running before Bill Gates bought it from the author and sold it to his mother's workplace making billions since then.

But it was cool writing your own programs and teaming up to figure out how to do things.

My brother built his own rs232 port to get peripherals linked in.

$1,000 per meg of storage on a hard drive when the price came down and memory that was $150.00 to got to 32 K of RAM!!!

My first 8088 then 286 and so fourth. I remember typing a program in to the system and after a week of typing code I jumped for joy, kicking the plug out and loosing everything I got.

My first disc drive was $300.00 from a friend with a switch he put in two read both sides of the disc...That means I had a whopping 720k of space on my drive.

going to a blazing speed of true 8 megahertz clock speed with my Evergreen chip and really flying in style.

Pentiums that broke the gate at $1000.00 per unit at 90 megHZ.

Basic - Cpm80 - Dos 1.0 - MS DOS 3.3 - Dos 5.0 (My Personal favorite) - Dos 6.0 - Windows 3.1 - Windows 3.1 - Windows 95 - Windows 95b se - windows 98 - windows Milenium (Here we went backwards) Jump now to 16 bit Windows NT - 32 bit - Win 2000 pro - windows xp - VISTA! (Now we go a bit backward.

Smart People jumped on Linux and kids that got an Apple in school had their parents by those.

My goodness I seem to remember formatting my Modified Frequency Modulation (MFM) encoding hard disc by start and end, bad sectors, etc..

Anyway it was a struggle to keep those drives up and running with voltages and bad sectors cropping up on flimsy software. Thank Heavens for Peter Norton in the early years. His was the only software that truly worked. Somewhere along he line they lost it though and others stepped up to the plate.

Then the shareware, Wow that was cool. People went to those early computer shows buying software up like junkies going to the pusher man. I was one, yes. Couldn't wait to see what each author was going to do.

Anyway I see those years were spent in the world of repairs and building and learning every software under the sun. Watching the evolution and we are still some thirty years later working on bad chunky software that is prone more now to bad clusters and viruses then it ever was.

And yes Apples have been about 8 to 12% of the computer market til they crashed and Bill Gates threw some millions there way to take the heat off him. Then they used a ton of dishonest ads like the recent ones that were forced off the air in England for violating the truth in advertising laws. We in the US don't really worry about that, lying on TV is an American way of life it seems. Anyway the should be back to 12 to 16 % about now and so they don't worry about Viral attacks because they are too small for the authors to attack. Now with their guts by LinusTorvalds [pronounced LEE-nus], Linux [Pronounced LEE-nus, he named it after himself but it is so mispronounced now I guess it doesn't matter] Kernel, they are pretty secure but still closed Architecture and twice the dough for te same speed. They run windows software because their was not enough vender's to write for them for a while with such a small market. Music is primary support for Macs but television used mostly Amiga for years and most of the larger studios I worked with, used both Mac and Windows units.

Anyway Atari would be considered the precursor to the PC crowd. Most every tech I knew over the years cut there teeth on an Atari. With their 800 computer you could actually burn 8 bit EPROMS (used for making Game cartridges). You could write your own program and put it in an EPROM.

They had user groups that flourished on the WELL and Internet. When the WWW came in thanks to Tim Lee in Cambridge (Lot of smart Guys in Cambridge, MA), People had 8086's then There 8088's, I joined with an 8086 to America online and talked with friends in Germany who where on CompuServe. I then Beta tested AOL's new venture GNN and got a lot of free time on the web. GNN had a great browser and the newest Firefox is much like it.

Anyway I am boring the pants off you so I will just say that Computers are here and they are not really going anywhere soon. Once they can get those millions of switches in a cpu to run cooler, we will be looking at multi-chip computers for a while. But once someone figures out how to make a casing that can dissipate heat super fast in a tiny footprint we will be in the true age of robots.

Baltimore Comic-Con 2007

Well The 2007 Baltimore Comic-Con was bigger this year but with more no-shows.

It was still a good show and the promoter does a nice job with a very efficient staff.

Cesar, Ace, Rusty and I set up on Friday and Met a lot of the Inkwell Crew.

Al Feldstein was there from Montana. Al was a brush man back in the MAD days and was one of the Editors of Mad that put it on the map. He was a very nice guy and a hot ticket.

Don "the Duckman" Rosa was hawking his wares as well. I love his Duck work. He is all tech pen and does a super job with his stories. He was busy from start to finish.

Mark McKenna had his "Banana Tail" set up and his Comics Buyers Guide Cover with Billy Tucci was really a hit with the people I talked to. Mark is one great guy.

Jim Califiore was there with his art and doing sketches. Jim is good with pencil or quill.

Cesar was busy for the two days with sketches and I inked a couple of them for people that stopped by.

Serigio was swamped with people. Who doesn't love "Groo" or the Mad Marginals.

Another inkweller, Cully Hamer was there as well. Nice art huh! Cully does great work.

Jim Starlin was there signing and he liked our book as well. Jim is a great Guy and I can't wait to see his new DC stuff. He will be finishing up his "Kid Cosmos" as well.

Mark Sparacio was there with his incredible art. Here he is holding a peice that Billy Tucci posed for. Mark also finished the cover to issue #1 of the upcoming "Sgt." Rock series along with Billy Tucci. Here are some of the Inkwell members, (L to R) Cesar Feliciano, Bill Meiggs(rear), Norman Lee, Neil Volkes, and Me. These are a great bunch of guys and Bill is a great inker. Norman is not only a great inker but one heck of an artist. Neil is "Da Bomb".

Another Inkweller and one third of the Taco Trio (Andy, Tom Nguyen and Keith Champagne), Andy Smith was there Doing nice commissions and signing.

Here he is...Franchesco! He sold his sketch books out the first day so I missed buying one. He is such a talented artist and a great guy.

My "Full Mon Craze" Posse, Ace Masters (Publisher), Rusty Bartlett (Editor) and Cesar Feliciano (my favorite penciler).
Rusty was selling autographs for $1.00 each for sodas.

Cats, Cats and more cats...

Just thought I would post a picture I took yesterday, of one of my newer cats (had her a year now). She has a heart murmer and so no one wanted her. Can you believe that. She is a Devonshire Rex, and I guess she won't have any hair, because they usually have it by now. They are extremely warm so in the winter every cat in the house piles on top of her. And she is really animated when she moves.

People think because she has an ET face that she is strange but we love the little tyke.

Also here is a photo of My old Timberwolf Jack, I just found today. This is in Lynn Wood Reservation. We used to run there a lot. I miss him. His granddaughter is now about twelve and not going to be around much longer, she is the last of his line. She has Shepard in her though. Jack got frisky with a shepard we had when we were not looking. Lycos (grandaughter) has been a great pet and we lost her playmate Kyle a couple of months ago. they were close in age and he was a Huge Lab mix with a heart of gold.

Anyway just killing time while no one is here.

Hi

I have been out with a back injury that still has not healed up yet, but I can sit at the board, so that says something. Man Years of abuse and I only break a knee or get all shrapneled up, but a pulled muscle stops you dead in your tracks.

I am waiting for pencils to finish up an Issue of "Full Moon Craze" coming out in September Previews and should be in stores this October.

While waiting I did a quick Ink for Mike Williams for a pin-up going in Viper Comics "the Expendable one" #2 TB, due out this August. Here is Original ink and colored version.

King Kirby!

While waiting for my next batch of pencils from Cesar, I was lucky to find a Fantastic Four #72 cover penciled by Jack Kirby, with a large Silver Surfer for the cover.

I knew I had to ink it. It is like a step back to simpler times inking the great ones.

I used a #3 W&N series 7 and 102 crowquil with a #2 and 8 rapidograph pen.

OOOHHH! Vampires and Goth chicks... Full Moon Craze by Masterpiece Comics will be solicited in Diamond previews in July, for September release. It was bimped up because we were to be black and white, but a friend from Canada, Serhan Yenilmez is coloring it and it looks great.

So look for Full Moon Craze in September.

Inking...

I just inked a Neal Adams Tarzan pencil. It was like inking Jim Lee, Picking the lines that are correct to ink. It is nice if you get to talk to the penciler or understand how every line is interpretted. So I guessed. Hope I guessed right.

Neal has a really great pencil style. He has a great dynamic to his art and is easy to see why he is so popular.

I would love to see this in color. One of these days I will go through photoshop and atempt to color.

Been a while

I am still trying to finish up a six page mini series so I have been busy.

I did manage to get in a Don Rosa Ink. I love Don Rosa's Duck drawings. I know he pencils and Inks his own work with pen and it is great stuff.

This is a recreation of a cover Don did.

Inking this was a blast. I never inked a Rosa before and it was fun. I used a number 3 W&N series seven brush and rapidograph for backgrounds.

Doing a regular gig like Scrooge would be tough making so many circles I would think, but he does it so well.

If you have not checked out his work, go to Gladstone and get a copy of one of his books, you won't be dissappointed.

NEW YORK CON REPORT

What a great show it was.

I met many wonderful artists and creators and some friends as well.
The hotel we stayed at was not the best but it served the purpose.

People were in line for hours fighting the bitter cold to get in early.

The major publishers were all well represented.

Archie had just about everyone there and DC had quit a line up.

Stan Lee was there and held auditions for who wants to be a Superhero. Last years top 3 were there along with some additional guests from other shows.

My focus was on art. They had an abundance of talent there. I loved Gene Colon's stuff as well as Neal Adams. Jim Starlin and many others.

I noticed they priced the smaller vendors out and so only large dealers were there. That was my only hang-up because you did not have the amount of venders that you would have at smaller affairs. Artist Alley was huge though so there was plenty to see.

I would definately like to go back next year.

New York Comic Con

Hi, Been a bit between posts. I am gearing up to leave now for Manhatten. The New York Comic con at the Jacob Javits Center.

Should be a busy show. So many Artists and Inkers as well as actors actresses and Stan the Man as well as Steven King.

I laughed, I cried, I hadda good time with it. Wonderful assortment of talent and an entertaining book (I like to look at the pictures).

Steve Rude

I met Steve Rude at Baltimore a couple of cons ago and was impressed with his sketchbook. He was very nice to talk to and was alone, unless that was his wife (Kidding).

Anyway I remember when Nexus came out, how I liked the artwork he did back then, and enjoyed his style. Now Danny posted this page to ink by him, so I did it yesterday to see how it was. I could do better over pencils but blueline should be ok. I did not change a thing because I do not know if he likes things changed (looked good to me).

I hope to see more from him since he was a talented artist. And wish him much success.

FMC Update

I have to say I like the art Cesar is putting out for me to ink in Full Moon Craze. We are on issue 4 of 6 and I like inking him. I have noticed a refining of the inking process, and am getting more comfortable inking him.

I was not a big Vampire fan, but I read some early Marvel Drac stuff to get a feel, and am likeing the story so far.

I think you will like it once you start but you have to buy all six issues to see the progression and finish the story. Plus you will have these rare collectible books.... This is one of those Thrill-A-Minute books you can't put down.

Well I finished the last page of issue 3 of "Full Moon Craze". It is a 6 issue mini series due out in 2007. I will start on isuue 4,5 and 6 as soon as Cesar finishes the rest of the pencils.

I have also Just completed a Cover for "WildBoys" Issue #1, which is also being sold through Diamond Distributors by Masterpiece Comics. Penciled also by Cesar Feliciano.

It was fun and here is a small part of the page (Wait 'til you see this one.).

Full Moon Craze...

OK "Full Moon Craze" By Ace Masters, Cesar Feliciano and your truely, is inked up to issue # 3 of 6. The books will be getting spiffed up for printing soon, so as soon as it is ready I will post here. In the meantime Masterpeice comics has started selling their first book "Fireblast" through Diamond.

so check it out and remember, I may be slow until I get the pages for issues 4, 5 and 6, so if anyone needs some inking of pages or commissions I will be available. This goes for ARCHIE COMICS.

Swamp Thing...

Steve Bissette kind of defined Swamp Thing through Alan Moore's writing for me. It had an organic look much like Bernie Wrightson. Although that is difficult to convey to comics, Tottleben did an excellent job on Steve's pencils. Sooooo...Having stared at a page that looked difficult to tackle I took hold of a #2 W&N brush and went to work trying to capture that sureal and organic look.
As you can see it is a little difficult but I hope I at least came close.

My apologies if it did not.

Inking up a Storm...almost

Well I am three pages out to having three issues go to the colorist and letterer of "Full Moon Craze".

So while inbetween Jesus Antonio Hernandez Rodriguez drew a Batman peice, and I had to ink it. Jesus is becoming a very proficient penciler and I like the style he pencils.

I hope to see more from him.

Meanwhile Cesar is plugging away on "Full Moon Craze" making the last few pages Killer. I guess we will do a six book arc so when these got to diamond for distribution and sale we will be finishing up the last six issues, the script is actually good on this series...could be a film in the works, you can never tell. Don Rosa Rules!

Don Rosa the artist for Gladstone's Uncle Scrooge is a great guy and I had him do the covers for my sketchbooks because I love his stuff.

I got a Carl Barks page to ink a while back, and just got round to inking it. I used a #3 Brush and tech pens, with more white out then I have ever used.

The trick is to keep a consistent size to the line weights (not equal but bold). This is no easy feat, Archie has a similar look and if it varies you loose the consistency of the art, and it will be noticed by the readers.

Don uses tech pens and curves, which is a time consuming tast, and skill to keeping the art consistent. He does this well and so my hat's off to him.

It boils down to one thing, echoed by a fellow inkwell member, Practice, Practice, Practice.

New story...

I just finished a story that Jesus Antonio created, and penciled (see links to his site on the right).

I love his style. Joe Pruitt, an up and coming colorist, did a flat color ( my choice) on the story like the old days. I wanted to have an old south western feel so I did not want colors to distract from the story. I could be wrong but I feel a good story with a good graphic (Sans effects) moves quickly.

I did my first lettering job on this story and hope I did ok. We may have another letterer actually do it over, but I wanted to see if I could do it.
This is page one.

I am not sure which book it is in but I will post as soon as I know. It is a cool story and sort of a fifties EC style.

The Flash!

While waiting for some pencils, I decided to have some fun with the Flash pencil, Norm Rapmund did for a Challenge I inked. I was looking at it and had an idea for a cover we will never see. So I lightboxed his Flash and I pencilled the Character from the first Action comics cover and two support players.
Funny how the mind works. Norm is a wonderful artist and inker.

Full Moon Craze is Coming...Almost

Well, Five more Pages and a cover and Ace Masters, Full Moon Craze, will be ready for transformation into a 6 issue mini series. Based on a woman kidnapped and taken to a castle by a Vampire, It should be a great series.

The book is not real gory but has some great moments of suspense and drama.

I Also have been working on a Book of short stories with some artists that should be out in 07-08 time period and I will post previews a little latter on.

Blue Note...

OK here is my sorry butt, at the Blue Note Lounge ( The Real Blue Note not one of those Yuppie joints on TV and Films). The Cage was not up this night.

Mississippi Dick Hudson on Background Vocal, and Jammin' Johnny Vass ( The real Deal Guitar Man, on the Hummingbird).

I forgot to use my secret, Just for Men shampoo that night.

The Blue Note Lounge is now officialy closed and it is a shame if you never walked on it's Gummy Floor. The food was great if you are a sobriety challenged person. I will miss the ice cubes with their carbon laced diamond look and the faint whisp of molded rainbarrel water (E-coli couldn't even survive here).

To quote an old friend Henny Youngman, "...the checkout girls name was Rocko.".

The urinal was so small if you used the urinal by the door and somebody walked by to get out they owed you a dinner.

The waitresses were sweet girls (I may run into them again so I am being good here)

If someone liked you they either would stand in front of you screaming the wrong words to the song out of key, or the girls would dance in front of you trying to seduce you with there drunken stare, and they usually looked like David Brenner with boobs...only older and with more tatoos.

The aroma of stale beer and watered drinks though dulled the senses, it's the way of nature to protect you.

I will say they had a blues jam that did feature some super talent and bands that had some of the top people in music sit in with them. It would be crass to mention their names here because they were always good to me.

I post it here because my brother Pete put this on his website so.... Here is his Fabian look back in the sixties playing a guitar I don't remember him having. Anyway he is playing in Dover, New Hampshire once a week and having a blast. I won't mention Biddy Mullgans unless they pay me a fee.

Figure I have to post my bad with his good.

Baltimore Con Update

Well I went to Baltimore Con with Rusty B and it was nice.

We headed to Washington on Friday and took the Metro to all the Smithsonian Buildings.

We stayed at Motel Hell on the beltway because Yankees and two conventions took all the good hotels. The toilet was broke the first day and no fridge or microwave. the tv worked after we connected the antenna and got a few channels.

The con was a blast. I spoke with many artists there and got a lot of tips.

I am surprised at the number of inkers working on books today that are strictly marker people. No Brush, no nib. The pages look great and that's what counts.

Lou ferigno blew off a little kid that wanted his book signed for free, so put him on the sh*tlist.

Dick Ayers was there and did a sketch in my book. HE and his wife are really nice and she was really into the whole comic thing, so good for him.

George Perez was very nice to his adoring dealers who brought truckloads of books for him to sign. They really should limit these Ebay and dealer guys to two hundred copy limits...SSHEEESH!

I got some great instruction from Mike Manley, who edits Draw! through twomorrows publishing. He's a great guy.

Met up with fellow Inkwell members And had a good time. Went to the Hotel bar and got hammered on one drink...Met up with Mark McKenna and Jim Califiore and some others there.

Saw Jim Starlin and got the critique on the Superman he drew. He seemed to like the inks except the hair highlightas which I suck at so he showed me a method to block it in. I will be doing a lot of practicing in that.

I saw Alex Saviuk, Penciler on Superman in the seventies and Spiderman Dailies. He had some great art with him.

Anyway it was a good trip and I guess I will be off in February to the New York affair.

I guess Rusty B and I will be heading to Baltimore Comic Con next weekend. Looks like a lot of good talent will be there. It has been a couple of years since we were there last.

It is a nice trip so I will give it a try. Last time I had to stop and drop a Guitar off at CF Martin in PA. This year it will be a quicker trip.

Mark McKenna will be there so don't forget to order Marvel's Excaliber #14 Penciled by Jim Calafiore and Inked by Mark. Always support the good guys.

Full Moon Craze...

I am finishing up issue Three of Masterpiece Comic's "Full Moon Craze" Penciled by Cesar Feliciano. Masterpeice Comics has a few books coming out soon and are done by some terrific talent. You can view their website at http://mpc.rebeldawncf.com/

Ace Masters is the mastermind and I hope he does well with all of his hard work. His "Fireblast" Comic should Launch in November 2006.

Cesar is giving me a workout with his incredible pencils and it is a lot of fun to ink him. I can't wait to see the finished version.

I also met up with Jim Taylor in Boston, who is penciling for Masterpiece and his stuff is great as well. I think that once Ace releases his line of comics in Previews Magazine, as they are ready, that they will sell themselves.
I have not read the script but Full Moon Craze, it is definately a Vampire tale and I can't wait to see it colored and lettered.

So look for Masterpeice Comics in upcoming Previews and get them while you can.

Tom is an Artist/Inker/Body Builder all in one. He has a wonderful website and I highly recommend his books and DVD. He has a great approach to drawing and it is nice that he does this.

I hope to post a page or two in next few days. I am trying to bang some pages out to finish book two of a project. I am really wanting to get a good brush conditioner. Seems my W&N and Raphaels are losing there spring and that makes inking a lot slower.

More Archie Stuff...

I just finished a couple more pages of an Archie story. It is kind of tough trying to figure line widths. Archie seems to have their own standard to keep things pretty much the same from

book to book where Super Hero books are distinct to the penciler and inker.

For example you know it was Mike Grell or John Romita once you look at the art.

Boston Comic Show

Rusty B and I went to the Boston Comic show Sunday. We met up with Cesar Feliciano. We had a cool time, Cesar is producing better pencils everytime I see them. We exchanged pages there. Man Cesar, the new pencils are pushing my inking to the limit. I learn more by inking these everyday.

Norm Breyfogle and RickLeonardi was there and Scott from the Inkwell. Rick is doing the JLA Classified story and showed us the pencils. I hope he does well.

Norm's book about Vampires is a gas. Nice job and a lot of work. Brilliantly illustrated.

We also met up with artist Jim Taylor who is penciling for Masterpeice comics, same company Cesar and I are working on a title with. They are slated for a 2007 release.

We talked with Denny O'Neil and I asked him the criteria he used in assesing art and inks when he was with DC and basically there is no formular. Dennis said it was a gut call. If he liked it it was going through.

All in all, while no San Diego convention it was productive and we had a good time.

Now I have to bang these pages out for Cesar with my Skilled, precision skills honed by many months of guessing.

Archie Comics

I have been reading Archie since the late 1800's and they were pretty cool. A lot of guys I know have never read comics yet they always know who the characters are (A guy Thing, Huh.).

Archie comics produces a quality line of comics free of death and destruction. They are wholesome and refreshing. And better yet you do not need to collect thirty issues of a comic to read a story.

Well the Archie from the forties was kind of a Mickey Rooney take off of the freckled face all American teenage boy. Slowly they pulled in characters we know today. In the 40's the artwork changed ever so slightly and then in the fifties it continues to today with very little change.

Who has not heard of Betty and Veronica, what about Jughead, Moose, Dilton or Big Ethel and the rest hanging out at Pop's Chocolate Shoppe.

Dan DeCarlo was a favorite artist/Inker of mine as well and I loved his work with Archie.

As much as I love inking superhero and monster pages I would love to Ink an Archie story or at least a one pager. I did some pages that Fernando Ruiz penciled from Archies Mysteries.

So if you like you can write or e-mail Archie comics and ask when I will be inking something in Archie.

That aside The inkers at Archie are extremely Talented. Jim Amash and Bob Smith are amazing in their range of inking.

They have many great pencilers as well like Stan Goldberg, Dan Parent and Fernando Ruiz. So pick up a copy and enjoy the world of Archie.

Inking Tools

OK, After many pages of inks, I have come to the conclusion that anything you can use to make a page look good is fair game.

If you want to ink for a living though it seems there can be only three, a Brush, Crowquill and white out or Pro White.

If you use tech pens to ink a page to emulate brush or quill work you effectively are doing twice the work for the same money. You wouldn't cut your grass with hand shears, so why take the time when you can work faster with the correct tools.

I am 99% brush now, and use quill for lines and some curves. I am trying to develop my skill with brush because you lay one teeny thin line to bold and it is in one pass. And like Bob Ross says "I have many happy accidents."

I find circles and short curves to be difficult, but that is a hump I will overcome. Feathering is also my weakness. I could cheat and make them perfect but then a page a day becomes a page every two days and that won't be good.

Anyway, I would use anything I could to do effects and am looking for some suggestions.

I really should explore the possibilties. Any suggestions ae geatly appreciated.

Doodling...

I am constantly Doodling and have still not learned anything. I love early Archie art and so I do a lot of doodling Archie characters. Here are a couple.

I just draw and sketch in no particular direction. Like I am letting out a steam valve.

I suppose you should diciplin yourself as you go but with no formal training I wing it.

I do know that with constant drawing you will always improve.

So what about Hal Foster? You ask...I love Hal Foster's art and it is the best I had ever seen to tell a story the way he did. I see a lot of Hal in Wally Wood's art.

I just love doodling Prince Valiant as well.

Batman and Superheroes are diferent now to doodle because I have to do it from an inkers eye. So Now I have to restructure my doodling.

Anyway This is what I do to draw...Nothing structured unless asked to.

Well I almost have Cesar's pages done. He likes drawing.

I hope he is happy with them. I love his work and am learning a lot as I go.

It must be easier to work in an environment with another inker to say, "Uh Uh!" or, "NO! Do it this way." So I sit on needles waiting for the word.

To ink or not to ink...Jim Lee

I'm baaaaccckkk! Hi, A friend of mine, Larry, who will remain nameless asked me to ink a couple of pages from the Jim Lee / Frank Miller Batman and Robin Book 1.

I love Jim Lee's Pencils, although I love Scott Williams Work I do not envy Jim's Inkers. You have to be a really, Really good inker/artist to ink him.

While I am relatively a sucky inker I gladly accepted the offer and inked the Vicky Underoos page and the last page.

I know Aaron Sowd said to look a page over carefully for the approach but it did not work for me. I still did not understand his pencils well, because of my in-experience in inking. So I grabbed the bull by the horns and did it "My way" (By the song of the same title).

JimLee has a very cool sense of graphic design and flow. His anatomy for comics is uncanny and I never appreciated his work in detail and background until I inked his work.

I guess I am just catching on to what his fans already knew. Personally I liked how he has the tenacity to see each panel through, but you need to be a fast quality inker to make a living inking him. I would be more of a "Sad Sack" type Inker.

The last one is a Superman Page That Jim put on his blog as a sort of challenge to Inkers.

A lot of people did a great job. Here is my humble effort. I even put my initials on the consol between Superman's Leg and Batman's Cape.

Inking

Ok where was I... Oh yeah Inking comics. I like it. I started out using almost all quill, but due to bad paper made the shift to brush, and now I found good Paper, so I can use quill as well.

I met Joe Sinnott at a Boston Show and he told me he was all quill now(102), and he does his Spider-Man dailies that way. They looked liked brush.

I used about 50/50 I think on the Nick Fury he drew. I love his style of comic art.

I Am Trying to get the feathering thing down. I had a metal rod go thhrough my wrist and up my arm and it took a while, but have now gotten really good control to ink, so I have no excuse not to get smoother with practice.

This is a New Avengers Cover I inked (Johnny Dell Inked the Published version). Jimmy Cheung penciled this cover and Johnny Dell turned it into a great cover. I thought I would see how close I could get to keeping the lines true.

It is no small task inking Cheung, he is such a tremendous penciler that varying from what he lays down will stick out like a sore thumb.

Unless you are better than the penciler or Bob McLeod ('cause he is just too good. See his site of the same name.), than it is best to follow the lines, adding proper line weights and shading in the form of hatch work.

Here is a really cool artist, Ed McGuinness. Here is a Superman Cover (I ask Forgiveness but the published inker escapes me. I will put his name up as soon as I learn it.)
I really like his work and the only thing I did was remove the halo around all the parts. I don't know why but I do not like halos because I do not see them. It may be the Eisner, Wood influence of comic art, where everything was backlit.

In Ed's art it fits though, because it is a cartoony style. I just wanted to see what would happen if I inked it.

Anyway I used a lot of brush on these and if I forgot, I am now using Windsor and Newton Series 7 #2 brushes. 102 Crow Quill and #512 as well as Pelican Black ink. When using my own paper I will now use only EON's Paper.

Next: I butcher Jim Lee's stuff...

Ok this is the last on me. I could write volumes on stupid things I did. Projectionist for else's Moses Lowe until his death. E.M. Lowe was the kind of guy that would give you $1000.00 because he wanted to. If you expected it he give you nothing. You could also tell what he had for breakfast, Lunch and dinner by his tie (not nice but true). He was good to me though.

I also had a PT Boat I got with a friend from Baron Bruno Bic ( The pen and Lighter guy ) it was a sub chaser about 20 X 80 foot long and was to much so after 5 years the sba took it.

I met up with butch at a show we were doing in Boston when I had him sign some autographs for fans and they wanted our picture. He is a good guy and I hope he got work.

Sherry Lansing was my executive Producer on "School Ties" and is a wonderful woman. I think she is president of Paramount features now. Her husband William Friedkin was her partner. She is still my favorite producer. Gino Lucci took the picture. Gino is another story. A great Background guy and I think the did write a book about him. Cheers Gino!

Ok that's it except I used to be an avid shooter since I was 14. Have not done this for a few years now. Here is a photo of me with the local social Gun club in the 70's.

Mini Bio 2

Loving music, I met a couple of guys who helped me in my Sound Studio work. Gary Hardy (Sun studios) and Bob Westbrook. They are the beginning of Karaoke in the US (Song Masters). Licensed through them I had the early rights in the Boston area with my "All-Star Studios along with a friend Dennis Landry.
We stayed and did some work at Sun in the eighties. there was a guy named Bryan Adams down there then. I think he did well for a while.

The picture is me at Jerry Lee's organ at Sun Studios (only had one leslie speaker but he was good in mono anyway).

This is a photo of me, Gary Hardy (Owner of Sun) and Denny Landry

Gary Hardy has since sold Sun and the new owners turned it into shit! Gary is a great singer, musician and DeeJay in Memphis. He also had a place in Graceland.

I recorded some songs there but have always been a background singer. It took a long time for me to make an ass of myself in front of an audience.

To the left is longtime friend Bobby Hebb who wrote and performed "Sunny", " A satisfied mind" and recieved a grammy for updated "Natural man". He toured with the Beatles and is a tremendous talent. (Do I look Fat? I have an excuse...really, it's those damned drive-thru's.)

I used him in a PBS season opener on UFO phenomena. He played Barny Hill and did a great job.

It's funny I worked with Cher and so many other talents but Bobby and Roy Orbison seem to have been the Musicians favorites. To know him is to love him. He has recently moved back down to Nashville and I hope to see him soon.

I have not mentioned my girl Jeannie that has put up with me since the early seventies because she would bend, fold, spindle and mutilate me if I posted a picture of her (I will find a good one sometime but don't tell her).

I was asked for a mini bio so I will do it in two posts.

I am ex-Marine. Worked around the East Coast (I find fault in the West Coast - ooh that was bad huh.)

I have been working in Film and Television and Print media for since 1977 in varied capacities. Mainly known for Camera Cars, Picture vehicles, Custom Stunt vehicles.

I have worked on films like "The Brinks", "Mermaids", "School Ties" (Me on Left in "School Ties - One of my many duties on that film), "Man without a Face"and more.

In Television I worked for over 10 seasons on "Unsolved Mysteries" as well as "Rescue 911", "True Detectives" and others.

Commercials from "Clothing" to "Electric Shavers". BMW of North America, Germany, France and England. Phillups Electronics of America, France and England, to many to list.

Stuntman, Cameraman, Camera car driver, Directors second, Production co-ordinator, Background co-ordinator, Property Master and Stunt driver / co-ordinator and in rare instances I can be seen in a few etc..

The picture above is, left, Don Runion ( Stunt Fighter - World Class Motorcycle Champion), Middle, Buddy-Joe Hooker (Premiere Stuntman and Legend. Note his new Terminator 2 jacket), Right, Me on a Paramount set. Wonderful guys and I wish them well.

I have experienced pretty much all the aspects of crap on a set and am now retired from it.

In between filming I produced over 2000 capicity concert shows for Entertainers such as Jay Leno (pre-Carson), Roy Orbison, Henny Youngman, Ron Dante (Archies and the Cufflinks-Sugar Sugar-Tracy), Mark Lindsey of Paul Revere and the Raiders (Indian Reservation and much more), Gary Lewis and the PLayboys (This Diamond Ring and more), Bobby Hebb (Sonny and Natural Man), Billy J Kramer (Little Children-Bad to Me), Andy Kim (Rock me Gently), Yakov Shmirnoff (Debuted "What a Country!") and much more.

Above is Henny and me, We did a show called "Christmas with Henny". He was like my Grandfather except he liked younger girls. But I miss him.

Through the years I have maintained my computer skills from the seventies and have tried to stay on the crest of hardware and networking.

My main love is music and art, and that leads me to here posting my inks for comic art. Anyway I will get back to you and we can do lunch...more next time.
